Peshawar, the City of Hospitality

Peshawar derives its name from a Sanskrit word "Pushpapura", meaning the city of flowers. Peshawar's flowers were even mentioned in Mughal Emperor Babur's memoirs.

Peshawar is one of the most colorful cities of Pakistan and is the capital city of North West Frontier. It is located west of the Bara River near Khyber Pass. Popular places in Peshawar include Peshawar Museum, The Old City, Qisa Khawani Bazar, Masjid Mohaabt Khan, Fort Bala-Hissaar, Islamia College, Peshawar University and Rose Garden.

History of Peshawar

Peshawar is old, so old that its origins are lost in antiquity, founded over 2,000 years ago by the Kushan Kings of Gandhara, it has had almostas many names as rulers.

After the Kushan era, Peshawar declined into an obscurity not broken until the 16th century.

Mughal emperor Babar came to Peshawar, he found a city called Begam and rebuilt the fort there, in 1530. His grandson, Akber, formally gave the name Peshawar which means "The Place at the Frontier" and much improved the bazaars and fortifications. Earlier it had been known as the "City of Flowers" and the "City of Grain". In the days of the Kushan King it was called the "Lotus Land".

Sher Shah Suri, his successor, turned Peshawar renaissance into a boom when he ran his Dehli-to-Kabul Shahi Road through the Khyber Pass. Thus Mughals turned Peshawar into "City of Flower" by planting trees and laying out gardens.

Peshawar was the center of Buddist Gandhara civilization and an important place of pilgrimage.

As Buddhism declined in international importance, Peshawar also fell on hard times.

In the 9th century the provincial capital was shifted by the Hindu Shahi kings to Hund on the Indus. After the invasion of Mahmood of Ghazni, all traces of gentle, artistic Gandhara were lost. The great Babur marched through historic Khyber Pass to conquer South Asia in 1526 and setup the Mughal Empire in the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent Peshawar not regains any of its former glories until the advent of the Mughals in the 16th century.

Many flights operating from UK provide easy access to the city. You can book cheap  flights to Peshawar with tickets to Pakistan.

When Marco Polo visited Peshawar province in 1275 or there about, he found a place "The people have peculiar language, they worship idols and have an evil disposition". But these days Pathan hospitality is legendary, and since conversion to Islam, worshipping idols has ceased.

There are some great little hideaways ranging from simple beach cabanas to stylish small hotels and Portuguese mansions. It's good value, too; eating out is cheap and seafood is abundant. Fire Island Beaches : Ocean Safety

By Catrina Christensen

As the temperatures rise, more and more people are going to the beach.  It’s a place we all know and love.  All to often people forget that we need to respect the water.  Every summer along the beaches and bays, lifeguards protect the lives of everyone on the beach.

I wanted to share some basic water safety tips that myself and other lifeguards feel it is important to make sure people know.  Please just read through them, because you never know when you might use it!

Respect the water. The different color flags on the beach represent different water conditions.-Green: Low hazard

-Yellow: Swim with caution

-Red: High Hazard-Strong surf/currents

-Crossed Red Flags: Swimming prohibited.

3. Listen to the lifeguards and only swim while they’re on duty.  Hours, months, years have been put into training and gaining experience to ensure your safety.

4. Don’t swim while impaired.  Every year guards make so many saves on people who have been drinking or using drugs

5. Watch your children.  All it takes is one wave, he or she getting tired, or just wander off for something to happen.

6. Don’t turn your back to the water.

7. Learn about rip currents and how to get out of them.

8. Lean how to swim.

9. Don’t swim alone.

Last summer there was a terrible tragedy in Ocean Beach where a young man went swimming at night and drown.  The water conditions changed from being calm all day to rough at night.  With no way to really tell, it became an extremely dangerous situation.  We need to remember this and learn from this horrific tragedy to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Overall, the beach is the best place to be, so just be mindful of what you do while there.  Look out for yourself and those around you.  Play it smart and safe, but overall have an amazing time!

More 'Malice' - a good review and Greek rights

More 'Malice' - a good review and Greek rights There's a good new review of "The Malice Box" on a crime fiction blog in Australia:

Because the THE MALICE BOX is a combination of fantasy, thriller and mystery it is a different reading experience from a standard, more conventional thriller. It is also different from a lot of recent big-name thrillers in that it does have the adventure or the quest, but the characters are an important component at the same time. The fantastical aspects of THE MALICE BOX will require an acceptance of the unexpected and the other-worldly which is not going to appeal to all readers. The combination of the styles of language - the gothic and the everyday is also obvious at points in the book - not necessarily completely off-putting, but unusual enough to stand out.
And more good news - there's an offer on the table for Greek rights to the book. That will make the 10th foreign language rights sold for "The Malice Box." Labels: books, malice box

Fire Island Favorites

By Catrina Christensen

I’m sitting out on my deck, listening to some Bob Marley, relaxing in the sun, and feeling a nice breeze.  How can you go wrong on a day like today?  It got me thinking about all the special little things Fire Island has to offer.

As a child, I remember making friendship bracelets, and collecting shells to paint an sell in town.  As a teenagers, my friends and I would lay out on the beach and talk about life for hours, frolic in the water, and do some surfing.  In my college days, I would tell my friends in Delaware about this magical land where there are no cars, the beach only being a couple of steps away, and gallivanting through town at night time.  Now, I’m 26 and have more appreciation for the serene days at the beach, the beauty of every sunset, the characters I meet, and most of all, and the peace of mind I get out here.  I look forward to my daily runs, Thursday night BBQ’s and Sunday Funday with my beach family, fun-random nights playing darts till all hours, the dedication I put into all of my work, and the sunsets that are never the same.

People around me have similar feelings.  Here is a short list of some things people have told me some of their favorite things about Fire Island are:

That its an escape from reality.Refreshing beach drinks like Rocket Fuels, Alba-Teas, and Zippy’s.Wagons, no cars, bikes.Flip flips, sand in my toes.Late night dance parties.Meals on the bay.Beach days with friends and family.Sunsets.

I’d love to hear everyone’s favorites things about Fire Island, you can post right here in the comment section at the bottom of the page. Feel free to share your Fire Island favorites!  Have a great weekend and come and enjoy Fire Island!
